Universal Search is something that search engines have been implementing for several months now, and it's the blending of non-traditional items into search. The most prevalent right now seem to be video results (especially from Youtube, for those of you interested in Search Engine Reputation Management) and maps results.

Depending on the query, Google Base products (i.e., for ecommerce queries) also show up, and we're seeing Google News a fair bit too.

Search isn't just about the ten blue links anymore, and it's increasingly becoming a question of how many places on the page can you occupy using results from other mediums that the search engines blend into the results. Whereas a lot of this used to be seen/done mostly by reputation management pros, it's increasingly happening for competitive commercial queries too.

For bloggers, the best ways into Universal Search are getting into Google News as well as ranking for local results. You might take BrandCurve or Marketing Blurb and submit them as businesses to the search engines' local listings areas. Then, to get ranked, I suggest you see this local search engine ranking factors survey compiled by David Mihm, featuring the opinions and experience of himself, another 18 local SEO experts and yours truly.

Notice also that David put in the work to organize that, come up with questions, contact and assemble the answers of 19 other pros besides himself, and then design a nice layout for it. He definitely has a large ownership stake in the 'local SEO ranking factors' topic now.

For those also hawking products through their blogs, Google Base might be an interesting avenue to pursue, though I personally don't know as much as I should, unfortunately.

Hello all. I have a client that is getting great rankings regarding searches for her name and her products in her location. She has 6 websites that are getting the great search rankings but now she want's to change all that to branding. Meaning when someone searches for her product within her location, or her name, the search should return her new domain by her new brand name. The question I have is this accomplished by SEO techniques or by social networking? One example I might give is if someone searches for rings in Tucson she want's the search engines to return her Brand Name, not her name and not her business but her brand name. I believe the long term goal is the equate jewelry in Tucson with her brand. Like when people want a tissue they actually ask for a kleenex. Something like that. I'm not sure if I can tweak the seo keywords, headings and titles to accomplish this or use her social networking tools and blogs to do it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

I am having a bit of trouble understanding what happened and why. We are a manufacturing website with two heading brands. Our main site (manufacturing) is:

( midsunspecialtyproducts.com )

Our brand names are:
( tommytape.com )
>> points to >>
midsunspecialtyproducts.com/tommy-tape/

( nitrotape.com )
>> points to >>
midsunspecialtyproducts.com/nitro-tape/

Because we are small, we have been keeping all the brands on one site (Joomla CMS with JOOM SEF). In turn, each domain points to a specific page on the midsunspecialtyproducts.com domain.

Now, the Nitro Tape one works perfectly, Google and Yahoo recognize it just fine. Midsun specialtyproducts.com shows up fine too!

The huge problem is that our Tommy Tape (redirect or domain) page doesn't show up when you type Tommy Tape on Google at all, yet in Yahoo, it is in the top spot.
Being curious, we tried pointing Tommy Tape.com to the main domain (where midsunspecialtyproducts.com goes), and it instantaneously showed back up as first rank again. So we believe either the landing page itself or the redirection is the problem. Not entirely sure where to go from here. Google Tools was a dead end on a definitive answer.

If anyone can help out or give insight into what is going on and how I can get this all straightened out, I would love to hear from you. We lose customers everyday over this small little detail... Thanks for reading!

My company, Tongal.com, recently created a new crowdsourced content distribution model, whereby, members of our community are incentivized to share videos they or other users created with their online networks to drive downloads for a specific iPhone app.

We're offering some pretty serious cash ($3,500) to the member who generates the most downloads for the app. Basically, each video has a hover-over with a prompt to download the app and we track downloads via a traceable code assigned to each member of the site.

We figured this would be a great way to generate awareness for the client and simultaneously increase their user-base. Obviously, the people who read this forum are probably some of the most skilled in the world when it comes to generating this type of traffic / conversions. So, if anyone wants to take a stab at winning this thing, it will be happening for the next 30 days on tongal.com/winepicks.

BTW, Tongal is free to all and we will be hosting a number of competitions like this one in the months to follow.
